HISTORY OF THE SENĆOŦEN LANGUAGE

The SENĆOŦEN alphabet was devised by the late Dave Elliott. Dave was born on the Tsartlip reserve in June 1910. Like many Saanich families of the day, he fished and traveled over the historical homeland of the Saanich. His family knew all of the places by their original SENĆOŦEN names. Dave once said, “I saw how our old people lived before our own speaking system was broken down. Our people were the wealthiest on earth. We needed nothing. We lived in a virtual paradise”.

Continue to value our history and will move forward with contemporary education rooted in our W̱SÁNEĆ worldview. Our program will model W̱SÁNEĆ disciplines and values to foster respected families.

OUR PROGRAMS

This program is a SENĆOŦEN immersion experience ( EWENE W̱ENITEM ḴEN SḰÁL – no English Language is spoken). Children ages 3-5 will learn the beginning understandings of SENĆOŦEN language through circle time, outdoor play in playgrounds and in the forest. We encourage parents to begin their child’s SENĆOŦEN immersion education at this level.

*We strongly recommend parents who choose to enroll their child in this stream to take Adult SENĆOŦEN language classes*

This program is a fully SENĆOŦEN immersion experience (EWENE W̱ENITEM ḴEN SḰÁL – no English Language is spoken) for children 5-6 or at the Kindergarten program level. Our program teachers meet the Ministry Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the Kindergarten Curriculum. Children will spend 3.5 hours in classroom learning the Kindergarten Provincial Curriculum through a SENĆOŦEN medium. For 2.5 hours per day, children will also learn through engagement with nature in the playgrounds and forests around our school and at beaches and culturally significant places. Children can enter the LE,NOṈET Immersion stream at this level.

We offer the W̱,SENĆOŦEN IST: Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization through University of Victoria. This 20-month, 2-year program aims to support learners who want to build on their Indigenous language proficiency, better understand the contexts in which Indigenous languages can be successfully taught, and gain some basic language teaching skills. This program is delivered in community-based contexts for specific Indigenous language groups. The Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization then ladders into the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization.
