JOB SUMMARY
The W̱SÁNEĆ School Board is seeking an exceptional leader for the position of Principal at the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Secondary School. The school serves a student population of approximately 134 students, and 35+ staff members, with projections of growth.
The incoming Principal will replace a long-standing employee who supported and embraced our culturally vibrant community, with a safe and caring school culture and instructional excellence.
The traditional territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ are situated on beautiful Vancouver Island, approximately a 30-minute drive from Victoria, B.C. and south of Sidney B.C. Our W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Secondary School is in Brentwood Bay on the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) First Nation. The W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Secondary School also services SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout), BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin), W̱SIḴEM (Tseycum) First Nations.
The W̱SÁNEĆ School Board is seeking a progressive leader with demonstrated success combining their passion for education with administrative expertise. The principal will be committed to quality and innovative initiatives and value the input of all community partners and stakeholders. The principal will be a caring and passionate leader who inspires our educators and students.
DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS
- A solid understanding of, and experience with the BC Curriculum and First Peoples Principles of Learning
- Ability to effectively liaise with First Nations Schools Association (FNSA), other First Nations organizations and with local School Districts
- Superior leadership skills and experience with high school programs and curriculum
- Superior organizational, interpersonal, communication, and team building skills.
- A commitment to students with diverse learning needs
- Detailed knowledge of current teaching methodologies
- Excellent skills in leveraging individuals in the formation of a strong school culture and community involvement.
- A commitment to supervise and assess performance to ensure alignment with organizational standards.
- Educational Leadership experience as School Administrator (Principal or Vice- Principal)
- Supporting and maintaining a safe and caring school, and good community relations
- Success in fostering intellectual, emotional, and social growth in students.
- Support the implementation of the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board Strategic Plan
- Develop long/short term goals in accordance with the Mission and Philosophy
- Support opportunities to rekindle and restore the W̱SÁNEĆ people’s culture and language including further integration of culture and language activities into school operations.
DOCUMENTED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Indigenous Education and/or Public Administration, including leadership experience as School Administrator (Principal or Vice-Principal)
- Current Membership in the BC College of Teachers
- Proof of successful working relationships with public school and First Nations schools, particularly in the context of Enhancement Agreements and/or Local Education Agreements; as well as First Nation Education leadership organizations such as FNESC and FNSA
- A minimum of 5 years administrative experience working in a First Nations School
- Criminal Record Check for vulnerable sector
Preference will be given to First Nations Ancestry.
